Urgent Need For Blood
Currently, the community's blood supply is down 615 units in Type O+ and O- combined, which are the types in greatest demand at local hospitals.
The reasons for the shortage include heavy usage at local hospitals over the weekend and below average collections. Attempts to source blood and blood products from other blood centers around the country have been denied as they too are experiencing critical shortages. Hospitals and trauma centers can't function without Type O blood, the most common blood type. Approximately 44% of the population is either O+ or O-.
"Inventory levels are at the lowest point they've ever been this summer," said Michael Anderson, spokesperson for Hoxworth. "We're asking all individuals to donate at their earliest convenience as this situation is very serious."
Please consider donating at the Hoxworth Blood Drive at Brown County General Hospital on Thursday, August 2nd. The drive will be held in the East Wing Basement Conference Room from 1 PM to 6:30 PM. Please call Teri Baumann at (937) 378-7712 to schedule an appointment. Drop-ins are also accepted.
