Mass Casualty Volunteer Training Exercise Offered
In the event of serious mass casualty occurrences within the county, a prepared team of
volunteers will need to be available to meet the demands of such an emergency. To insure
a prompt and efficient response, a training exercise will be offered on Saturday, July 14th
by the Tri County Medical Reserve Corps in cooperation with Brown County General
Hospital, the Brown County Health Department, Emergency Management Agency,
Medical Reserve Corps, Citizen Corps and other South West Ohio Regional
Emergency Response Agencies.
Registration will begin at 8 a.m. and training will begin at 9 a.m. in the parking lot behind
the Brown County General Hospital, next to the water tower. The training will end at 1
p.m.. Lunch and refreshments will be provided.
The goal of the exercise will be to train volunteers to set up a wing of the Alternative
Care Center for mass casualties and to demonstrate the capabilities of the ACC to local
first responders and emergency planners. Following the set up, the Brown County
Medical Reserve Corps will be enlisting volunteers willing to be part of a core team in
Brown County that could be counted on to head the set up of ACC in an actual
emergency.
The Alternative Care Center is a 222 bed, 7 wing, mobile hospital/command center, with
independent generator power, and heat and air conditioning. Each section of the ACC
can be set up independently depending on the circumstantial need. In the event of a mass
casualty, as a result of a tornado or flood, the ACC could be set up in less than 12 hours
on the scene for emergency treatment or at the hospital to extend patient care capabilities.
The ACC can also be used as a temporary shelter in the event of an ice storm such as the
one experienced a couple of years ago.
Additionally, on Thursday, July 12 at 7 p.m., an informational one hour presentation on
the ACC and how it is assembled will take place in the training room in the basement on
the back of Brown County General Hospital located at 425 Home St., in Georgetown.
This presentation is not required for the exercise but will give participants a good idea of
how to set up the ACC and what its capabilities are.
“We are pleased to be a part of this exercise training program,” stated Mike Patterson,
administrator for the hospital. “Brown County General Hospital has a responsibility to
our service area to be prepared for any emergency, and being a joint partner in this
project reflects our continuing commitment to efficient, professional medical care.”
