FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
BCGH FOUNDATION REVEALS GALA AWARD RECIPIENTS
The 6th Annual Brown County Heart of Brown County Gala, a charitable event
coordinated by the Brown County General Hospital Foundation, will be held on Saturday,
February 16 at the Eagles Hall in Georgetown beginning at 5:30 p.m.. Guest’s will enjoy
a catered 3 course meal, dancing to the music of the Pete Wagner Band, and the
opportunity to bid on some fabulous silent and live auction items.
The main event of the evening will be the honoring of people from the present and past
who have made a difference through their generous and varied contributions to Brown
County. The Foundation has named the following individuals who represent this
generous quality as the 2008 recipients of the Brown County Heart Awards.
The Clinician Award will go to the late Linda Haines, RN. (1939-1994). Linda knew that
she wanted to be a nurse from an early age when she volunteered as a high school aid in
the Adams County Hospital. After graduating in 1957, she enrolled in the Bethesda
School of Nursing and upon graduation dedicated her life to the nursing profession. She
began her career at Adams County Hospital and upon relocating to Georgetown became a
staff nurse at Brown County General Hospital. With the retirement of Edith Wyatt, RN as
Director of Nursing, Linda was promoted to this position in the early 1970’s. She would
continue in this position until the early 1980’s. A plaque honors her in the courtyard at
Brown County General Hospital.
The late Dr. Leslie Hampton (1925 – 1996) will be honored as the recipient of the
Physician Award. Dr. Hampton graduated from Indiana University School of Medicine
in 1953 and practiced medicine in Brown County for many years. He had particular
concern for senior citizens and their continuity of care. This led to his work to help found
Meadowwood Nursing Home in Georgetown. The nursing home opened in 1968
and Dr. Hampton served as medical director until he retired.
Rev. J. Edgar Tweddle ( 1913-1979) will be posthumously honored with the Heart of
Brown County Pioneer Award. Rev. Tweddle served as pastor for the Georgetown
Presbyterian Church from 1945 through 1978 and holds the honor as this church’s
longest pastorate. During the four decades of his life in Brown County he donated his
time and services to numerous organizations in Brown County. This list is rather
astonishing and you will amazed at all the generous deeds of Rev. Tweddle when you
hear his story presented at the Gala.
The Contemporary Heart of Brown County will be presented to not one, but two people
who have worked as one heart in their endeavors to preserve the history of Brown County
and bring artistic culture to the community. The Contemporary Heart recipients are John
and Judy Ruthven who together co-chaired the 1976 Georgetown bicentennial project
and purchased and restored the U.S. Grant Homestead. They also purchased an 1836
house located on East Grant Ave. and restored it to serve as the Thompson House Gallery
for the beautiful wildlife art of John Ruthven. Both have been actively involved in many
of the counties restoration and preservation projects since they arrived in Brown County
in 1970.
Learn more about all these individuals who have so generously given of themselves
for the benefit of Brown County during the Heart of Brown County Gala. Tickets
are $50.00 per person and can be obtained by contacting Teri Baumann at
(937) 378-7712. All funds raised with this event will go to the BCGH Foundation’s
Good Neighbor Fund.
